Tax Rates Reduced for Fifth Year in a Row

Thomasville, Georgia, 24 July 2018 --- The Thomas County Board of Commissioners will set 2018 property tax rates at its regular meeting on 28 August 2018. County Manager Mike Stephenson is recommending a reduction in the tax rate for the fifth year in a row. Millage rates are listed below by tax district:

District 2017 Millage Rates 2018 Millage Rates - Recommended

Incorporated 9.200 9.005

Unincorporated 7.724 7.531

Emer. Serv. 1.764 1.735

Fire District 1 3.149 3.063

Fire District 2 3.123 3.070

Fire District 3 2.353 2.340

“Though the reductions each year have been modest, we are moving consistently in the right direction”, Stephenson noted. Improvements in the County’s financial position are cited below:

  1. Health benefit costs have leveled off
  2. Pension plan is fully funded
  3. All county departments are controlling routine expenses on a regular basis
  4. Sales tax revenues are stable
  5. Insurance premium tax revenues are increasing
  6. Privatizing ambulance fee collections will increase revenues $750,000 in the first year

“I’m also confident that recent actions taken by the Board of Commissions will yield similar results in the future”, Stephenson stated. The closing of the county prison saved $500,000 in operating costs in 2018. Cross-training firefighters and EMTs will stabilize Emergency Services personnel costs while increasing service coverage.

The Board of Commissioners will set tentative tax rates at its next regular meeting, Tuesday, July 28th at 6:00 p.m. in the Historic Courthouse.
